I've always been curious about experimenting with form in every way I can - I also like to try to impart some spirit of play, to go with explanations or explorations - heavy ones especially.
I've been greatly enjoying the writing of Dylan Levi King for a couple of years now. Subtle perceptive and often poetic observations about life in China, Japan and Korea (along with the occasional piece about Vancouver noodle-houses).
People who miss the voice of Chatwin, will absolutely adore his substack (below).
But now I discover the professional writer (and outstanding scholar) side of the man, and I like him even more. I sometimes feel proud, for putting together a few strange ideas thanks to my unusual arc of experience, which I feel sure are original in combination and insight-product (not easy, now).
But this essay puts together history and philosophy which we do not think about at all, and then leaves us with a thousand questions which bear directly on our own lives and future (without ever being heavy handed, or telling us what to think).
So smart and so delicious in construction. YOU HAVE NOT READ THIS BEFORE!
(and really, with eight billion of us around - that ain't an easy mark to hit!
